Romeo + Juliet
New York City Ballet
JULY 18, 19 & 21
A production filled with dance, drama and movement, Peter Martins created Romeo + Juliet in 2007 to honor the 100th birthday of New York City Ballet co-founder Lincoln Kirstein. Based on Shakespeare’s classic romantic tragedy, the work is set to Prokofiev’s score, yet in City Ballet tradition, streamlined from the composer’s original three acts into two. Also in the company tradition, Martins’ work focuses on speed and virtuosity. The work features brilliant, abstract costumes and scenery by acclaimed Danish artist Per Kirkeby including a movable unit set that allows scenes to change in full view of the audience. Martins’ production is the second Shakespearean classic to be made into a full-length ballet for New York City Ballet; the first, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was created by George Balanchine in 1962. Last performed at SPAC in 2007, Romeo + Juliet was broadcast for audiences across the US in May 2009 on PBS’ Live from Lincoln Center. The work is part of NYCB’s winter 2012 repertory in New York, January 16 – February 26.
