David Robertson
AUG 16

“…like all great conductors, Mr. Robertson didn’t just deliver a beautiful performance. He increased our sense of the work’s strangeness and stature, showing how it recycles rhythmic and melodic material as it goes on while almost imperceptibly transforming from sardonic to sincere.”
- The New York Times

A consummate musician, masterful programmer and dynamic presence, David Robertson has established himself as one of today’s most sought-after American conductors. A passionate and compelling communicator with an extensive knowledge of orchestral and operatic repertoire, he has forged close relationships with major orchestras around the world through his brilliant music-making and innovative ideas. Currently in his seventh season as Music Director of the 132-year-old St. Louis Symphony and 12th year as Principal Guest Conductor of the BCC Symphony Orchestra, Robertson has amassed volumes of critical praise such as the review by Zachary Woolfe of the New York Times which noted, “…like all great conductors, Mr. Robertson didn’t just deliver a beautiful performance. He increased our sense of the work’s strangeness and stature, showing how it recycles rhythmic and melodic material as it goes on while almost imperceptibly transforming from sardonic to sincere.”

The Los Angeles Times underscored the intensity he brings to the podium in its review of his August conducting performance of the opera Wozzeck , “…Robertson is finally, a passionate conductor. St. Louis has gotten used to seeing him in tears at the end of performances of big, emotional symphonies. Here he mouthed the words of every phrase as he conducted, not only drawing the singer’s voices into the orchestral fabric but actually appearing to be living the opera as it was enacted.”

A champion of young musicians, David Robertson has devoted time to working with students and young artists throughout his career. In addition to creating and leading many outreach programs with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Orchestre National de Lyon, Robertson has worked with students at the Paris Conservatory, The Juilliard School, Tanglewood, the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland and the Aspen Music Festival.

David Robertson’s past tours include appearances at the Edinburgh Festival, La Scala, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Berlin Philharmonic, and Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony. Equally successful on the operatic scene with over 45 operas in his repertoire, Mr. Robertson’s opera house credits include the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Opéra de Lyon, Bayerische Staatsoper, Théâtre du Châtelet, Hamburg State Opera and San Francisco Opera.
