Dvořák Cello Concerto in B minor
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade
Gianandrea Noseda, one of the world’s most sought-after conductors, conducts his premiere performance at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on SAT, AUG 4 at 8 p.m.
Noseda is Music Director of the Teatro Regio Opera house in Torino, Italy, Chief Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Laureate Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. Noseda, who has been called “a magician of the podium,” makes his premiere appearance at SPAC conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra and solo cellist Johannes Moser on August 4 in the performance of two large-scale masterpieces, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
Most recently, Noseda was praised internationally for his extraordinary conducting of the London Symphony in a performance of Britten’s War Requiem last fall. The performance earned the conductor a spot on the 2011 Top Ten lists of the “Best Classical Performances of the Year” by several reviewers including those at New York Times and the New Yorker.
Reviewer Alex Ross of The New Yorker said, “Noseda marshaled the finest War Requiem that I have heard. He showed total control of Britten’s vast structure: the balancing of full orchestra against chamber ensemble; the tricky liederlike entrances of the vocal soloists; the staggering floods of sound in the Dies Irae and Libera Me. The performance was also an acutely expressive rendition of a piece that is too often handled as a technical tour de force…”
Born in Milan, Gianandrea Noseda serves as Music Director of the Teatro Regio in Turin which he has transformed into an internationally recognized opera house that tours regularly around the world. Noseda was announced as Chief Guest Conductor of The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra after stepping down from his post as Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic after a highly successful decade leading the ensemble. During the season 2010/11 Noseda conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra for the first time (in November 2010), the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington (in February 2011) and the Orchestre de Paris (June 2011). Noseda was the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1997 where he also set up the ‘Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra’ and served as its Principal Conductor; between 1999 and 2003.
